a poll among likely voters that has mitt romney down eight points. the trend in polling in that state, all the polls, obama is way, internal polling has obama ahead in the mid to high single digits. today ohio does not look the same as florida, for example. florida looks like a true toss up. colorado looks like a toss up. nevada. ohio, by the numbers does not and i would say and we've talked about this, without ohio there are scenarios mitt romney can be elect elected president in terms of winning 270 electoral votes. he needs ohio or i needs to find a way in some combination of wisconsin, iowa, michigan or pennsylvania. >> before i let you go, jeff, jump in here as well. paul ryan has spoken out on that incredible missed call at the end of the packers/seahawks game. the nfl is saying they stand by the call, at least roger goodell is under a lot of pressure. this is paul ryan in cincinnati. >> going to start off on something that was really troubling that occurred last night. did you guys watch that packer game last night? i mean, give me a break. it

only one day to go before mitt romney faces off against president obama in denver and our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows voters across the nation are placing more importance on these debates than the last time a sitting president ran and was challenged. joining me chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and nbc political editor mark murray. mark, first to you, go through the numbers on the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. others have shown tightening of the race. when you asked voters whether they are looking to these debates more than last time did. >> people are paying attention. four in ten saying this is going to matter, be important to their vote, although worth noting about six in ten of the people said this wasn't going to be all that important. when you dig inside the numbers it shows that key parts of president obama's coalition african-americans, latinos, are actually putting a high importance on the debates which actually kind of shows the challenge that mitt romney has to actually get his side as enthusiastic about it. >> a shrinking group

that perception created i would say by millions and millions of dollars by barack obama spending in swing states is that mitt romney is a wealthy person who is buy and large looking out for the wealthy and dismissive of the poor and middle class. video reinforced that and i would say i would point to an nbc/wall street journal poll, when you mention the middle class and romney ad, nbc wall street journal asked which candidate cares more or is more focused on the middle class. obama had a 19 point lead, 53/34 on that. i don't think mitt romney wins that question even if he wins the election but he can't lose it that badly. >> chris aliz scizilla, and tha karen. thank you for joining us. >> joining me for a closer look into the race, vin weber adviser to the romney campaign and governor ed rendell, a political analyst. welcome to you both. vin, this is a big challenge. you know the numbers, the battleground states better than i do. ohio, ohio, ohio. how do you do it if ohio becomes out of reach? >> we're not going to give up on ohio. it is critical. everybody makes that point and it's a val

how are both campaigns trying to reach the early voters? >> well, i would say, nbc's first read, your kind of early morning primer, put together by nbc politically, i thought was right. a two-minute ad that president obama is running in virtually every swing state and that -- certainly every swing state that's voting early and that ad's the kind of ad you run in the last week of the campaign. why now? the obama campaign understands everybody voting on november 6th is antiquated. lots of people vote early including earl states. they're saying we need to get our message now. this is where the obama team believes, it's hard to prove these things, because everybody throws a bunch of numbers at you, we knock on this many doors, made this many phone calls. the obama team believes the grassroot organization they built in '08 is alive and well and kicking, and better than anything that mitt romney can have built in that same time. and that it will deliver their supporters to the polls in these early and absentee times and build leads for barack oba
